The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic and How it
Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World is a book by Steven Berlin
Johnson in which he describes the most intense outbreak of cholera in
Victorian London (See 1854 Broad Street cholera outbreak) There were 2
epidemics around 1850; each killed 53000+. The disease could kill in less
than 24 hours. I found it to be a page turner.
I first learned of this author when I watched his PBS series "How we got to
Now" which explored the history and uses of light, glass, sound, clean, cold,
time.
